The combination of Bob Jornayvaz (2) and Adolfo Cambiaso (10) has become almost insurmountable in the world of high goal polo. The Valiente victory in the 20 goal Ylvisaker Cup last Sunday looks like another year of Valiente domination of South Florida high goal. Especially considering the limited number of teams in the remaining 26 goal tournaments.
There were eleven teams in the 20-goal competition and now seven teams have deserted the International Polo Club and headed across town to the 20 goal at Grand Champions Polo Club. That leaves only four teams to compete in the 26 goal Triple Crown. The powerful Valiente team has hired Facundo Pieres (10) and now some patrons feel the powerful combination of the world’s number one and number two ranked players on the same team has all but eliminated any chance for another team to make it to the victory stand.
Last year Bob and Adolfo won the American Triple Crown. It was the first time that has happened in seven years. Valiente has been in the Open final for of the last five years. It was Cambiaso’s eighth Open title, the third most in the sports history. The pair also put together wins in the Colorado Open in Denver last summer and the San Jorge Open last fall in Argentina. Now, with Facundo wearing the Valiente blue the future of polo is changing face once again.
