Abu Dhabi, 19th March: Dubai’s Habtoor Polo Team, led by Emirati player, Mohammed al Habtoor, beat Jordanian side, Sumaya Polo by three goals in the second match of Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club’s HH President of the UAE Polo Cup.

Habtoor scored the bulk of their goals early on, with Hamza Mawaz, Fran Elizalde and Guillermo Cutino combining to score six goals all scoring a goal each in the first two periods. Mawaz then scored Habtoor’s seventh and final goal in the final chukker.

Meanwhile all of Sumaya Polo’s four goals came courtesy of Argentine player, Augustin Canale.

The action continues on Tuesday when Saudi Arabia’s Zedan Polo take on Dubai’s Desert Palm and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) face Bin Drai Polo.

Argentina’s Ramiro Cordero, who plays for ADCB, said his side was hoping for a strong showing against Bin Drai Polo.

We have been looking forward to our first match in this tournament for a while,” he said. “We know Bin Drai are a good team as they went all the way to the final in the recent Gold Cup but we have been focusing on our progression in this tournament and hope to win tomorrow.”

The HH President of the UAE Polo Cup is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club and held at Abu Dhabi’s Royal club between the March 18 and March 30 and is the largest polo tournament in the Middle East.

This year the event features two groups showcasing the talents of emerging Emirati players as well as high-goal professionals from Argentina. Umpiring the matches will be two officials who have presided over matches at the highest level of polo – the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires.
