The following article is a translation from the original article published in Spanola by Grandes Caballos Segunda Parte August 2011. Although not specifically for the breeding of polo pony the wisdom is here precious of the horse.

Del libro del famoso KEN MC LEAN “GENETIC HERITAGE” (autor también de varios libros muy influyentes sobre crianza del pura sangre y consultor manager del importante OVERBROOK FARM en KENTUCKY) en un capitulo sobre la Mitocondria celular, se destaca un párrafo del libro “life itself “o sea “Vida Misma” del Dr. Francis crick - coautor del descubrimiento secuencial del ADN – que dice lo ste: “todos los organismos vivientes deben necesariamente competir por el alimento, por aparearse y por todo espacio viviente, especialmente con otros miembros de su propia especie.
Ellos deben evitar los depredadores y otros peligros. Por todas esas varias razones, algunos tendrán más descendencia que otros y son las características genéticas de tales preferidas réplicas las cuales serán transmitidas (OJO) preferentemente a generaciones venideras. En términos más técnicos, si un gen confiere incrementada “aptitud física” en su poseedor, luego tal gen es mas probable sea encontrado en el pool genético de la próxima generación.
Esta es la esencia de la selección natural” este párrafo nos puede ayudar de alguna manera a explicar la influencia.
Establecer la influencia es apasionante, es la parte más importante en la selección de líneas compatibles en los cruces, pero también es algo abstracta y su medida absoluta son los RESULTADOS, tenemos el ejemplo del legado del excepcionalmente inteligente Francés JOSEPH VUILLIER que actuaba con el seudónimo de LOTTERY, en su libro “ les croisements dans le race pure” realizó un trabajo descomunal en los inicios del siglo XX , el cual determinó que sólo unos pocos ancestros poseen y transmiten una INFLUENCIA genética superior, la cual será transmitida a futuras generaciones, el razonó que por lejos la mayoría de caballos pura sangre eran de una indeseable calidad con muchas debilidades en su conformación, y que nos deberíamos de concentrar solamente en el 1% de la raza o sea los mejores para lograr ser ultra competentes, después de un exhaustivo estudio determinó que: sucesos pueden ser logrados copiando los ingredientes ancestrales de los ganadores clásicos que analizó. En su estudio el identificó numerosos y muy influyentes sementales, y una sola yegua madre POCAHONTAS.
Esos sementales superiores y la yegua madre representaron el común denominador en los pedigrees de todos los ganadores clásicos ingleses. El Sr. VUILLIER fue el analista en pedigree de su majestad el AGA KHAN, y que recordemos obtuvo por lo menos 4 ganadores del Derby y numerosos grandes caballos los cuales reinaron en EUROPA y también en los ESTADOS UNIDOS, a través de un buen tiempo.
Una medida para asegurar la máxima influencia seria restaurar las mejores líneas paternas y maternas de ancestros muy influyentes (sex balanced) en nuevas generaciones – preservando de este manera los genes heredados por los mejores hijos e hijas de dichos ancestros- como negar la tremenda influencia y prepotencia de POSTIN en el Perú, lamentablemente su legado se diluyó lentamente hasta llegar a la extinción, ¿por qué? Probablemente sus líneas influyentes originales no fueron reforzadas convenientemente.
La influencia de un ancestro fácilmente puede llegar a más de 6 generaciones ya que contiene o contienen una distribución favorable de genes dominantes y que sojuzgan constantemente a los recesivos de otros individuos, su vigencia se presenta si solo si, es reforzada a través del tiempo por líneas del sexo opuesto (por supuesto las mejores) del referido ancestro. Es indudable la importancia que tuvo por ejemplo el famoso nick PHALARIS/CHAUCER en el antaño y que contribuyó tanto en los éxitos del famoso LORD DERBY ¿que ingredientes tenía? Este nick tenía líneas de sexo opuesto (sex balanced) de grandes sementales como ST SIMON (CHEERY, el mismo CHAUCER) HERMIT (DISTANT SHORE, TRISTAN) y STOCKWELL (SPRINGFIELD, THRIFT) amén de la presencia importante de POCAHONTAS, estamos seguros que este nick sigue siendo muy influyente a pesar del paso del tiempo.
Es importante tomar en cuenta en esta parte del proceso un tratado elemental de genética para poder entender mejor el término PREPOTENCIA que establece un camino paralelo a la INFLUENCIA.
Sementales prepotentes como los brillantes NEARCO, HYPERION, últimamente como NORTHERN DANCER, DANEHILL, SADLER´S WELLS son aquellos que tienen en su composición genética reacciones HOMOCIGOTO DOMINANTES (A,A) (D,D)....... o sea alelos similares en ambos lados de los cromosomas (tanto del padre como de la madre) para las características más importantes del caballo de carrera, tanto en conformación física como en performance de carrera, por ejemplo el mítico ST SIMON era HOMOCIGOTO DOMINANTE para la transmisión del color del pelaje (D,D), en nuestro PERU el buen semental FIRST TUDOR que era también HOMOCIGOTO DOMINANTE para la transmisión de color del pelaje, ya que todos fueron zainos o castaños (¿ alguno recuerda un FIRST TUDOR alazán o tordillo?) sólo son ejemplos ya que no está probado que el color del pelaje tenga influencia en la capacidad corredora de un pura sangre. De hecho los sementales prepotentes van a transmitir en sus descendientes rasgos semejantes en toda su progenie, el fenotipo o apariencia externa ayudará bastante; por otra parte la única manera de lograrlo es a través del inbreeding o del linebreeding, es más a través de las mejores líneas opuestas del ancestro elegido (sex balanced) si dichas líneas opuestas no son duplicadas, no podemos esperar el máximo efecto de los canales disponibles a ganar la INFLUENCIA del ancestro duplicado.
Como vimos en el ejemplo anterior sobre el Nick PHALARIS/CHAUCER este tuvo un número de líneas importantes muy influyentes de sexo opuesto (sex balanced).
Por tanto un concepto trivial de la influencia podría ser la de un ancestro o conjunto de ancestros con líneas de sexo opuesto, muy dominantes, prepotentes que son HOMOCIGOTOS DOMINANTES en su genotipo (conformación genética) para las características más importantes del caballo de carrera y dominan constantemente los recesivos de otros individuos motivo por el cual tienen una gran vigencia a través del tiempo, si solo si, son reforzados convenientemente.
A continuación alguna recomendación de consultores expertos en analizar pedigree, para restablecer la influencia de un ancestro en un cruce dado:
LES BRINFIELD una de las más brillantes autoridades en pedigree, fundador de Web importantes como Pedigree Post, Pedigroup, y co fundador de Tb pedix un grupo internacional de expertos en crianza del pura sangre....
“enumere los ancestros de calidad, prepotentes, dominantes, influyentes, en su yegua por sexo, sea especialmente atento a los hermanos enteros, ahora vaya a los catálogos y haga un recuerdo de un Haras que tenga los ancestros compilados en su yegua, trate de obtener estos ancestros a través de líneas de sexo opuesto (por ejemplo, LA TROIENNE, BULL DOG, y SIR GALLAHAD III son líneas de sexo opuesto de TEDDY) si fuera posible, el común ancestro tiene que estar en la misma generación. Seleccione un semental que tenga una hermana o hermana del ancestro en su yegua madre. Seleccione un semental que refuerce la familia materna de origen de la yegua madre.”

“ cuando miramos prospectos de cruces para caballos, primero noto si hay un inbreeding cercano en el mismo caballo, o si uno de sus ancestros desciende de un inbreeding influyente. Los caballos inbred tienden a lanzar a su inbreeding con líneas del sexo opuesto (sex balanced) del ancestro a los que ellos son inbred. Por ejemplo un caballo inbred a ROUND TABLE (PRINCEQUILLO –PRINCE ROSE y COSQUILLA por PAPYRUS – y KNIGHT DAUGHTER por SIR COSMO y FEOLA por FRIAR MARCUS) 3X3 pueden realmente beneficiarse con caballos que porten hijas de PRINCEQUILLO, por parte de la madre de ROUND TABLE, hijos de SIR COSMO, también hijos de PAPYRUS (TRACERY) balanceando las líneas del individuo inbred en este caso ROUND TABLE”. Pero cual es el origen influyente de ROUN TABLE y porque fue tan buen caballo y semental? Si analizamos su pedigree vemos que por el lado paterno tiene concentraciones del muy influyente Nick GALOPIN/HAMPTON, y por el lado de la madre encontramos el reverso HAMPTON/GALOPIN es indudable la fortaleza de este Nick que tan buenos caballos produjo.
Continuando con ANDREA´S THORO PAGE “otro ángulo a observar es a duplicar la familia de enlace común a través de su línea materna, por ejemplo si un caballo es inbred a PRINCE JOHN, uno quizá trate de ubicar cruces que porten EIGHT THIRTY, COSMIC BOMB (encontrados en HALO) que son de la misma familia materna, también WAR ADMIRAL, ellos tienen un único enlace a través de la madre BATHING GIRL, esta trilogía muy influyente ya ha sido probada en caballos de la más alta clase, por ejemplo SPEND A BUCK”.
LES BRINFIELD
El brillante LES le da otro matiz al nick, lo llama equivalente y veamos lo que nos enseña:
“usamos el término equivalentes y no hay mejor ejemplo que NOGARA la madre de NEARCO, con ya sea BULL DOG o SIR GALLAHADIII y construya el hipotético pedigree, nos da un hijo y una hija de AJAX, 2 hijas de SPEARMINT, y un hijo y 2 hijas de ST SIMON a ir con ANGELICA cuando se encuentren, esto no es un enigma ya que ellos conocen muy bien la huella. De hecho NEARCO produjo NASRULLAH, y este es raramente visto sin SIR GALLAHAD III, BULL DOG, o sus hermanas MARGARITA DE VALOIS, NOOR JAHAN en muchos campeones.
Mirando el 5X4 de NOGARA/BULL DOG en la madre de MR PROSPECTOR, GOLD DIGGER (nieta de NASRULLAH) uno no tiene por que no sospechar que esto va para atrás en el pedigree, sintetizando todo esto, esta el hecho de que LA FRANCE bis abuela de NASHUA es por SIR GALLAHAD III, a todo esto sume 2 líneas adicionales de BULL DOG en una yegua que desciende en línea materna directa de MARGARITA DE VALOIS y arribamos nada menos que a FAPPIANO.” Si analizamos los pedigríes de nuestros protagonistas tendremos en la mesa ancestros muy influyentes que entran en juego, veamos: ST SIMON en sex balanced con su hermana ANGELICA y un hijo (RABELAIS) y 2 hijas del omnipotente ST SIMON, todo esto enlazado con, posiblemente el Nick más importante en la historia de los pura sangre, BEND OR /MACARONI/AGNES, sólo un ejemplo basta y sobra para caracterizar este maravilloso Nick: ORMONDE el caballo del siglo XIX.
Como vemos ancestros muy prepotentes, importantes, de la más alta calidad. Es de notar que la yegua SCEPTRE considerada un tesoro nacional inglés a inicios de siglo era una hija de PERSIMMON en ORNAMENT que era hermana entera de ORMONDE; y el caballo ORME excepcional descendiente de ORMONDE en ANGELICA hermana entera de ST SIMON, ambos caballos representan un nick equivalente como diría LES BRINFIELD, y su aporte fue decisivo en madres importantes como LA TROIENNE la yegua madre mas influyente de todos los tiempos en los ESTADOS UNIDOS nada menos.
LA TROIENNE (1926)

Brillante analista de pedigree, autor de varios libros de gran importancia, como PATTERN OF GREATNESS I y II
En el brillante SEA BIRD el destaca la presencia de ancestros muy influyentes en generaciones distantes del pedigree, por el lado del padre, DAN CUPID advierte la presencia importante de CANTERBURY PILLGRIM, y en el lado de la madre el advierte concentraciones de RABELAIS y encuentra la relación entre ellos:
“si extendemos el pedigree de CANTERBURY PILLGRIM la madre de CHAUCER (padre de SELENE) encontramos en la 4ta generación los medios hermanos TOUCHSTONE y JOCOSE, el primero, uno de los sementales fundadores de la raza, y la 2da, madre del importante semental MACARONI, son ambos en una madre extremadamente influyente llamada BANTER. Nuevamente, MINORU, el abuelo materno de SELENE caracteriza TOUCHSTONE y JOCOSE tres veces en la 5ta y 6ta generación de su pedigree. LOVED ONE, el padre de la abuela de SELENE o sea GONDOLETTE, solo tiene un cruce de JOCOSE, pero en la 2da generación de su pedigree porta BUCANEER quien va en su línea materna hacia BERENICE hermana entera de BANTER.
Como ya hemos observado la madre de SEA BIRD es altamente inbred a RABELAIS, cuya 4ta madre es una yegua llamada SLANDER, la cual está cercanamente relacionada a JOCOSE Y TOUCHSTONE, SLANDER es ¾ hermana de JOCOSE y es en PASQUINADE propia hermana de TOUCHSTONE, en el tope de todo esto RABELAIS tiene como el padre de su 2da madre, un caballo llamado WILD OATS ¾ hermano de BUCANEER quien como hemos dicho también aparece en pedigree de SELENE, y llega en línea materna directa a BERENICE propia hermana de BANTER” lo importante de todo esto estriba en que animales muy distantes en el pedigree todavía continúan siendo muy influyentes.
Finalmente este capítulo de la influencia merece un espacio mucho más amplio debido a su tremenda importancia, es nuestro deseo hacerlo oportunamente..........
